FROM THE CHAIR
At the time of writing the State of Israel is having to suffer the slings and arrows of much opprobrium and prejudice, as well as frequent egregious misrepresentation. Unfortunately, official and unofficial attacks on Israel are on the increase, and they are painful to endure. But Israel is, to say the least, a very special nation. It has had to endure much in its 62-year history. Its people are brave, courageous and driven.
On our campus a rare feeling of quiet and harmony prevails. Everyone is able to carry on with the work they do, whether in science or education, with little or no interruption or disturbance. In the year since our last annual report we have welcomed back to the campus Tsachi Shariv in his new role as Vice President for Administration and Finance, replacing Gad Kober who has retired. FROM THE PRESIDENT
The most thrilling aspect of scientific research is the way that each new discovery leads to countless new questions. Lest this imply that research is a Sisyphean effort, I assure you that nothing could be further from the truth: For us scientists, it simply means that we still know very little and there still is a lot to discover; the opportunity to contribute to human knowledge and, ultimately, to improve the world, is all the greater.
This spirit of endless inquiry must be constantly nurtured. For the management of a scientific institution, this means that whatever we have accomplished, though it be of the utmost importance, is in the past. Our focus must, necessarily, be on what is needed for the future. I continue to be amazed that as soon as we believe we have achieved something major, another opportunity arises, more questions are raised, more people are required, more equipment is requested and innovative new methods are called for.
