Children of Ethiopian immigrants at the Weizmann Institute- Participants in the sparks of science program

Sparks of Science program. Promoting science and technology

A ceremony marking the completion of the “Sparks of Science” program for this academic year recently took place at the Davidson Institute of Science Education. About 100 program participants attended the ceremony, accompanied by their family, friends, tutors and mentors, as well as representatives from the Jewish Agency and the Davidson Institute.

Outstanding students were awarded a certificate of excellence, and three students, Ilan Mamo, Bat-El Eliyahu and Sarit Mashasha, were chosen to participate in the Davidson Institute delegation to the International Space Camp in Turkey.

The Sparks of Science program, whose aim is to promote science and technology among 9th – 12th grade Ethiopian youth, is jointly coordinated by the Davidson Institute and the Jewish Agency, in collaboration with Weizmann Institute scientists and students of the Feinberg Graduate School. Generous sponsorship was provided by the New York Federation. The program comprised weekly four-hour meetings, which focused on enriching skills in the sciences, mathematics, English and computer science. It also involved personal mentoring, as well as training for the pre-college psychometric test.
