Six research students, some of them graduates of the Feinberg Graduate School, were awarded teaching certificates in science and mathematics, and 30 teachers received teacher-mentor certificates during a ceremony recently held at the Weizmann Institute.

The Feinberg Graduate School’s teaching certificate program, conducted in collaboration with the Weizmann Institute’s Science Teaching Department, is in its 7th year. The program, which to date has trained 34 teachers, is intended for Weizmann research students, as well as graduates, who wish to obtain a certificate that will allow them to teach in the Israeli high school system. Scientific instruction is carried out by scientists from Weizmann Institute faculties, and teacher training in science and mathematics is carried out by academic staff of the Science Teaching Department.

Weizmann’s teacher-mentor program, now in its 6th year, was a notion developed by the Science Teaching Department in collaboration with the internship branch of the Ministry of Education. To date it has trained 87 teachers with experience in mathematics or science teaching to serve as mentors to teachers just beginning to work within the education system. The program not only helps to develop training, guidance and evaluation skills, but also enriches and deepens participants’ knowledge in the sciences.

Coordinating the different strands of the teaching certificate program are Prof. Anat Yarden, Dr. Rachel Mamlok-Na’aman, Dr. Edit Yerushalmy, Dr. Alex Friedlander, Prof. Nir Orion and Prof. Moti Ben-Ari; teacher-mentor program coordinators include Naomi Robinson, Dr. Esther Bagno, Dr. Rachel Mamlok-Na’aman and Dr. Nili Hirshfeld. Heading both programs is Prof. Ruhama Even of the Weizmann Institute’s Science Teaching Department.
