History
The European Committee of the Weizmann Institute of Science was established as a non-profit organization in Zurich, Switzerland, on May 17, 1960, by Dr. Josef Cohn, Richard Kronstein, Oswald Landau, Victor Loeb and Dr. Veit Wyler.
Dr. Josef Cohn acted as its first Exeuctive Vice President. In 1987 Avner Idan succeeded the late Dr. Cohn and led the business of the European Committee until 1998, when he handed over the torch to Dov Keren-Ya’ar.
Today, the European Committee operates both out of the Executive Office in Brussels and the Main Office in Zurich where it is registered as a charitable association.
Goals
The purpose of the Committee, as laid down in the articles of association, is to raise financial means and promote international scientific cooperation in order to further the development of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel.
Activities
The activities of the European Committee are aimed at increasing the awareness of the scientific work and research achievements of the Weizmann Institute of Science among interested individuals and organizations in Europe. The Committee serves as liaison between these individuals or organizations and the Institute in Israel. The activities of the Committee are carried out in close cooperation with the authorities of the Institute.
The local Associations of Friends of the Weizmann Institute in European countries are working in full cooperation with the European Committee.
