Prof. David Harel works in several areas of computer science, including computability theory, software engineering, visual languages, clustering algorithms, graph layout, modeling biological systems, and the synthesis and communication of smell. He joined the Weizmann Institute in 1980 and became Head of the Computer Science and Applied Mathematics Department in 1989. Appointed Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science in 1998, he also heads the Arthur and Rochelle Belfer Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science. He invented the graphical language Statecharts, co-invented Live Sequence Charts, and is one of the creators of Statemate and Rhapsody, software products used in major electronics, aerospace, automotive and communications firms. A recipient of numerous awards and author of several books, Prof. Harel holds the William Sussman Professorial Chair.
