While growing up in the former Soviet Union, Vladimir Bernshtam started collecting coins and postage stamps reflecting the history of the State of Israel. After immigrating to Israel in 1994 and joining the staff of the Weizmann Institute of Science, he became particularly interested in stamps reflecting the history of the Institute and the contribution of Jews from Russia and from other parts of the former USSR to the Israeli society. Today Bernshtam is a senior staff scientist in the Plasma Laboratory of the Particle Physics and Astrophysics Department, and a member of the Israel Federation and the American Israel Numismatic Association.
