במחקר שביצע פרופ' זיו רייך מהמחלקה לכימיה ביולוגית, שעבד יחד עם ד"ר אייל שמעוני מהיחידה למיקרוסקופיית אלקטרונים, ד"ר ולאד ברומפלד מהמחלקה למדעי הצמח, תלמיד המחקר ד"ר אופיר רב-הון, ובשיתוף עם פרופ' יצחק אוהד מהאוניברסיטה העברית. הם גילו, שקרומי ה"גרנה" מתפצלים ישירות מקרומי ה"סטרומה"

פרופ' גרגורי ("גרישה") פלקוביץ, ראש המחלקה לפיסיקה של מערכות מורכבות במכון ויצמן למדע, מצא שחלקיקי חומר קטנים מאוד, המרחפים בגל מים עומד, נעים בכיוונים שונים, הנקבעים על-פי מידת ה"אהבה" שלהם למים. חומר ש"אוהב" מים (הידרופילי) דוחה כמות מים שמשקלה עולה על משקלו, ולכן ינוע כלפי מעלה; ואילו חומר "שונא" מים (הידרופובי) דוחה כמות מים שמשקלה קטן ממשקלו, ולכן ינוע וישקע כלפי מטה
