Prof. Ben-Zion Shilo

 

Prof. Ben-Zion Shilo joined the Weizmann Institute's Virology Department in 1981 after finishing doctoral research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT. His lab was the first to identify conservation of cancer-causing genes in model organisms. His work focuses on communication between the cell and its neighboring environment in the developing organism, tracing the signaling pathway involved in these processes. From 1993 to 2001 he was head of the Molecular Genetics Department. His many responsibilities at the Weizmann Institute have included heading the committee that appoints professors and chairing the teaching committee for the Life Sciences at the Feinberg Graduate School. Beginning with a Fulbright fellowship in 1977, Shilo has received a number of honors, including membership in the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and the prestigious Michael Bruno award in 2000. He was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Biochemistry in 2004.
