Self-healing is normally the province of living creatures, but now a Weizmann Institute-led research team has discovered that it can occur in a semiconductor. This finding, presented in June at the European Materials Research Conference in Strasbourg and soon to be published in the scientific journal Advanced Materials, may help create better solar cells and other electronic devices.

The first general-purpose mechanical computer designed for biomolecular and pharmaceutical applications has been developed by Prof. Ehud Shapiro of the Computer Science and Applied Mathematics Department at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The mechanical computer will be presented today at the Fifth International Meeting on DNA-Based Computers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

REHOVOT, Israel - February 3, 1998 - A promising cancer therapy which destroys tumors by exposing them to light may be significantly improved thanks to new materials developed at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Institute scientists reported on the new development at the Conference on Chemical Modifiers of Cancer Treatment in Clearwater, Florida, on January 28-31.

REHOVOT, Israel -- May 7, 1996 -- New ways to combat pollution in Mediterranean countries with the aid of polymers will be discussed at the MEDNET International Conference on Environmental Impact of Polymeric Materials, opening next Sunday, May 12, at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The conference is the first major international attempt to tackle the pressing pollution problems in the area on a regional basis through the use of polymer technology.

Diplomatic contacts with various Arab nations no longer sound like science fiction to Israelis, but professional exchanges with people in some of these countries still have the flavor of an adventure. New developments in solid state physics will be discussed this week (January 8-12) at the Arkady Aronov Memorial Symposium to be held in Zichron Ya'akov, near Haifa, under the aegis of the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Heraeus Foundation, Germany. Some 140 invited participants from 15 countries, including France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Russia and the United States, will dwell upon scientific subjects that were in the domain of interests of the late Prof. Aronov, a world- famous physicist.
