New Drug for Multiple Sclerosis Receives Recommendation of a U.S. Food And Drug Administration Advisory Committee
19.09.1996
Disease, Drugs & Diagnostics
REHOVOT, Israel -- September 19, 1996 -- An advisory committee convened by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended today that the FDA approve the Israeli drug copolymer-1, to be marketed under the brand name COPAXONE®, for treatment of patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. Following the recommendation, the FDA is expected to grant approval for the marketing of the drug in the U.S. within the next few weeks.
New Concept Explains Why Mammals Can't Repair Central Nervous System Damage
16.09.1996
Brain & Behavior
REHOVOT, Israel -- September 17, 1996 -- Why is it that humans and other mammals are left permanently paralyzed or otherwise handicapped by injuries to the central nervous system, while fish and other lower life forms can repair such injuries and resume normal lives?
Prehistoric Fires Spark a Scientific Leap Forward
01.09.1996
Scientific Archaeology
By Miriam Bulwar David-Hay REHOVOT, Israel -- Somewhere, back in the mists of time, a primitive human realized how to light a fire. Suddenly, people could cook their food, keep warm in the cold, scare off predators, and, perhaps not least of all, gather around a central meeting place to enjoy one another s company after a hard day.
Monitoring the Course of Lupus
01.08.1996
Disease, Drugs & Diagnostics
Doctors may soon find it easier to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus, a potentially life-threatening disease that affects the kidneys and other internal organs, thanks to a new test developed by Prof. Roald Nezlin of the Weizmann Institute's Immunology Department.
An Open and Shut Case
01.08.1996
Plants and Agriculture
Some plants may have an easier time "waking up" than many people do, thanks to a built-in biological clock that causes them to open their leaves in the morning and fold them at night. Now a Weizmann Institute researcher has discovered a biochemical "switch" that appears to control this opening and closing action.
3-D Glasses for the Robot
01.08.1996
Space & Physics
The trouble with many robots and other automated systems equipped with artificial vision is that their eyes "see" the world as two-dimensional. As a result, they have great difficulty in assessing the relative positions of objects. Existing ways for robots to reconstruct 3-D images tend to be slow and cumbersome, but Institute physicists have developed a 3-D imaging technique that greatly speeds up and simplifies this process.
Personnel Management in the Brain
01.08.1996
Brain & Behavior
The brain acts like a dynamic personnel manager, constantly shifting its "workers," the nerve cells that control nearly all bodily functions, from one cell group to another to deal with a variety of ever-changing demands, according to a Weizmann Institute study published this month in Advances in Processing and Pattern Analysis of Biological Signals.
Scientists Brainstorm to Find Cure for Tourette Syndrome
10.07.1996
Brain & Behavior
REHOVOT, Israel -- July 10, 1996 -- An intensive effort to shed light on Tourette syndrome -- the humiliating genetic disorder known for causing sufferers to twitch and swear repetitively -- brought six Yale University professors to Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science recently for a meeting of leading scientific minds.

04.07.1996
REHOVOT, Israel. The Weizmann Institute's Professor Meir Wilchek has been named the 1996 winner of the prestigious Distinguished Clinical Chemist Award, given every three years by the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry. Prof. Wilchek, who revolutionized the purification of biochemicals, will be presented with the award on July 7 at the opening ceremony of the Federation s triennial international congress being held in London on July 7 - 12.
Rothschild Prize to Weizmann Institute Professor Yoseph Imry
26.06.1996
REHOVOT, Israel -- May 26, 1996 -- Weizmann Institute Prof. Yoseph Imry, a leading expert in the theory of solid state physics and one of the founders of the new and growing field known as mesoscopic physics, will today receive the 1996 Rothschild Prize in Physics, to be presented at a ceremony taking place at the Knesset, Israel's Parliament, in Jerusalem.
