There’s a saying in Arabic: “Mountains may never meet, but people certainly can.” Encounters between people are the thread that runs through the accounts of research and learning presented in this President’s Annual Report of the Weizmann Institute of Science.
Encounters – and their results – are what single out the Weizmann Institute from other research institutions and universities. Everywhere on the Institute’s picturesque campus, scientists working in fields ranging from astrophysics to molecular genetics, from computer science to plant science, meet each day. Over a cup of coffee or lunch, a synergistic, multidisciplinary research project might be laid out or its details sewn up. In this issue of the President’s Annual Report, several of these encounters were selected from the never-ending stream of new and surprising collaborations; many of them constitute completely original directions in research, opening new pathways to knowledge.
At the Weizmann Institute of Science, the encounters that scientists experience with new approaches and ideas are not limited to science. They are truly a way of life. The photos accompanying this report are but metaphors for the meetings and team work that take place between scientists – in many ways and in all possible places: on land, in the air or on water.
